How Does Sublimation Work?

Design Creation – The process begins with designing an image using graphic design software. The image is then printed onto special sublimation paper using sublimation ink.

Heat Transfer – The printed design is placed onto the chosen substrate (such as polyester fabric or a coated ceramic mug) and subjected to high heat (typically between 175-205°C) and pressure using a heat press.

Sublimation Reaction – When heated, the sublimation ink turns into a gas and embeds itself into the surface of the material, bonding at a molecular level.

Cooling & Finalization – Once the heat is removed, the ink returns to a solid state, now permanently fused into the material, resulting in a smooth, durable, and vibrant design.

Why Choose Sublimation?

  • Long-Lasting & Durable – Designs won’t fade, crack, or peel like traditional printing methods.
  • Vibrant Colors – Sublimation allows for high-resolution, full-color printing with rich and vivid results.
  • Soft-to-Touch Feel – On fabrics, the ink becomes part of the material, so there’s no added texture.
  • Versatile Applications – Works on apparel, home décor, promotional items, and more.

Best Materials for Sublimation

  • Polyester fabrics (or polyester blends with at least 65% polyester content)
  • Polymer-coated hard surfaces (such as mugs, tumblers, keychains, and coasters)
  • Certain plastics and aluminum sheets with a sublimation coating

Sublimation is the go-to choice for businesses, artists, and DIY creators looking for a professional, durable, and high-quality printing solution. Whether you’re personalizing gifts, creating branded merchandise, or launching your own product line, sublimation unlocks endless creative possibilities!

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Sublimation

What is sublimation printing?

Sublimation printing is a technique that uses heat and pressure to transfer dye into materials like polyester fabrics and coated surfaces. The ink turns into a gas and embeds into the material, creating a permanent, vibrant design.

What materials can be used for sublimation?

Sublimation works best on polyester fabrics, polymer-coated hard surfaces (such as mugs, tumblers, and keychains), and certain plastics and aluminum sheets with a sublimation coating.

Can I sublimate on cotton fabrics?

No, sublimation ink does not bond well with cotton. However, you can use sublimation-ready cotton products or apply a polyester coating spray to make cotton more receptive to sublimation.

Do I need special ink for sublimation?

Yes, sublimation requires special sublimation ink, which turns into a gas when heated and bonds with the material at a molecular level. Regular inkjet or laser printer inks will not work for sublimation.

Will sublimation prints fade over time?

No, sublimation prints are long-lasting and highly durable. Since the ink becomes part of the material, the design won’t fade, crack, or peel like traditional prints, even after multiple washes.

Can I sublimate on dark-colored fabrics?

No, sublimation works best on light-colored materials because the ink is transparent and does not have a white base. Dark fabrics will not show the sublimated design properly unless a white sublimation coating is applied beforehand.
